Sweat It Out Part Deux – Hair Update!

Recently, I took down my go to protective style – Senegalese twists:

Twisted up!
Twisted up!

This style is awesome for my workouts because it’s no fuss! I just pull my hair back and get to work. Before I took down my twists, I was hoping for length retention and strong, healthy hair. Especially since with twists, I combat dryness. Although I made sure to be consistent with my wash routine and spritz my hair daily with a hybrid of coconut oil, water and my favorite conditioners, my hair is still bound to be stripped of some moisture.

On my first wash day after my taking out my twists, I deep conditioned my hair with Giovanni deep conditioner and Herbal Essence’s Hello Hydration (links below). I still haven’t replaced my hooded dryer so I just got a taut shower cap (not one of my loose flimsy ones) and wore it for about 4 hours since I had a lazy Saturday. It worked wonders! My hair was nice and soft. A day later though, I noticed that there were still relaxed ends that were haunting me by making my hair harder to detangle and by giving my hair the appearance of looking dry. Soooooooo

This past weekend…I couldn’t help but give myself a trim AGAIN (I can’t stand the straight ends/I have a little obsession). I went section by section, trimmed straight, annoying ends and detangled with coconut oil and water. I felt a difference instantly. I co-washed my hair with As I Am Coconut co-wash and used just a little of Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie post wash. My hair looked neater, healthier and my curls were very bouncy:

Late December or Jan vs. April 2014; More curl definition, some growth and less relaxed ends!

(Current) Favorite Products:

As I Am Coconut Co Wash (still); Giovanni Smooth As Silk Deep Moisture Conditioner; Herbal Essences Hello Hydration (Kyra introduced this to me); Qhemet Biologics Amla & Olive Heavy Cream (still)

Lastly, I get tired of hair styles rather quickly. Therefore, I’ll be perusing YouTube to see what I can try out next. And as for my workouts, I typically do some type of a two-strand twist on one side of my hair and pull the rest back into a bun since it stretches that far now.

Any hair updates? Any new products that have made it into your hair arsenal?

    1. I didn’t know that you went natural. It’s a beautiful look on you! I use hello hydration too every now and then and love it…do you finger coil your hair?

      1. Yea, it sort of happened by accident. I went forever without a relaxer so I figured why not try something new? And yea, I love it and I love the price of it haha. No I don’t finger coil, my hair just gets super curly when it’s wet. Thanks for stopping by Hanna! 🙂

    1. Your hair looks so good! Keep it up girl!! I love Herbal Essences Hello Hydration, I used to use it all the time when I had a two. It made my hair feel ridiculously soft and it smelled great!

      1. Thank you!!! I’m trying lol, I’m enjoying this length for sure. Yea I’m glad that Hello Hydration has been working for me and that it lasts for a long time.

    1. Love your twists! And your curls! Do you find that you have any super dry patches no matter what you do? The crown of my head has almost no curl pattern and is chronically dry, even though I deep condition ALL.THE.TIME and keep it moisturized. #thestruggle #naturalhairblues

      1. Thanks!!! I’m debating on when to twist again. I want to let my hair breathe for a while though. I feel like the perimeter/front of my head gets pretty dry and the center of my head. Just keep deep conditioning, that’s all we can do. And I use more of the Amla & Olive heavy cream in those areas.

    1. How you care for your twists especially when you workout? I work out Mon-Fri and I find it difficult to leave them in longer than a month

      1. I got these twists around February 10th and I took them out April 25. The pic in the post is a week before they came out. I tried to wrap my twists every night with a silk scarf. During workouts, I would just pull my hair back in a pony tail. Post workout, I would take out the pony tail and let my hair air dry. Also, I didn’t wash every week, but typically every other week or so, because sometimes the water would weigh down the hair too much and get it loose. I always spritzed it though (water, coconut oil, favorite conditioner). As it got shabbier, I would try different styles that would mask those areas lol and that helped too.

        1. Thank you. I did twists last year for bday. I think this year will be just braids. Yours looks good and I love your TWA which you should enjoy while you have it. When your hair begins getting thicker and longer….whoa! Let’s just say maintenance and priorities becomes a juggle

          1. You’re welcome. Braids will be good! They do last longer for sure. And haha I know. That’s what my sister says! And I see that it definitely becomes more time consuming so yes, my TWA is my friend.
